"I am 19 years old with a 2 year old son; I have just graduated from high school and am attending college. Supportive Housing for Young Mothers has given me a second chance at life. I have become a better mother, a better student, and a better tenant, but more importantly, a better person. SHYM staff have helped me open my eyes to see the whole picture rather than just a piece. They've helped me to believe in myself and to make the right choices in life."
Amanda is a resident of Supportive Housing for Young Mothers (SHYM), an organization that has benefited from an IWK community grant. When she was 16 and in grade 11, Amanda became pregnant. She was living in a shelter when she learned about SHYM. She applied, moved in and has been there ever since with her young son, Jordan. She is currently a student at Nova Scotia Community College. SHYM is one of several community organizations in the Maritimes that the IWK supports because of the important work they do to support healthy families.
